ASSESSING THE POTENTIAL AND MODELS FOR DEPLOYMENT OF RENEWABLE ENERGY AND ENERGY EFFICIENCY MEASURES IN TSHWANE’S SOCIAL HOUSING DEVELOPMENTS: C40 Cities, City of Tshwane, 2024 – 2025
This implementation aims to establish a roadmap and strategy for deploying renewable energy and implementing energy efficiency measures in city-owned social housing developments, highlighting the necessary policy and regulatory measures, finance mechanisms and stakeholder engagement processes as well as the associated benefits for residents, local communities and the city in terms of city revenues. The implementation will further engage all the relevant stakeholders from social housing developers, city officials, development managers, financiers as well as selected residents on how to advance the strategy and roadmap towards implementation. Moreover, the financiers in particular will provide valuable insights on how the intervention can be scaled to provide sustainable & renewable energy in all social housing developments in Tshwane.

IDENTIFYING & DESIGNING SUITABLE FUNDING MODELS FOR FINANCING SUSTAINABLE ALTERNATIVE ENERGY SOLUTIONS FOR INFORMAL SETTLEMENTS IN THE CITY OF JOHANNESBURG: C40 Cities, City of Joburg, 2024 – 2025
The aim of the project is to support the City of Joburg in accessing sustainable long term funding for electrifying informal settlements. The project aims to explore internal and external funding mechanisms for alternative energy solutions for informal settlements. This includes identifying funding models at national and city level as well as exploring available international funding opportunities available to cities. The project also aims to develop and build robust business cases for financing alternative energy solutions for informal settlements. The business cases and models will support the city in policy and decision making, advocacy and sourcing funding.

REPAIR OF CHINESE DRAGON PILLARS: 2024
This large grey granite sculpture was damaged in a vehicle accident years prior and Sticky was appointed to carry out structural repairs and refurbishment. The structural repairs required engineer oversight and engineers certificates, with experienced specialist granite restorers. Consultation with the Chinese community assisted with repairing illegible areas, graffiti was removed from the 2nd sculpture and the project handed over to the client within time and budget.

PARK ACTIVATION COORDINATORS TRAINING – JOBURG, ETHEKWINI & STELLENBOSCH: 2024
In 2019, GIZ, in partnership with the Municipalities of Johannesburg and eThekwini, piloted the Park Activator Coordinator (PAC) program to activate parks using the underlying principle of creating safe community spaces through activism. Our team was appointed for all 2019 pilots and again in 2024 to expand the program through training and advocacy in new municipalities (this time adding Stellenbosch), adapting the ideas to local circumstances, creating inter-municipal partnerships, and testing new ideas that emerged from the 2019 learnings.

YOUTH KNOWLEDGE EXCHANGE: 2022
A BRICS cross-disciplinary youth knowledge exchange week long program designed and implemented by Sticky Situations, held at Wits University on behalf of The South African Research Chair in Spatial Analysis and City Planning.

PENNYVILLE PRECINCT DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM: 2022-2024
The JDA embarked on a co-production process which required the services of a Community Participation Consultant – from initial participatory design and project selection across two Wards and two Regions, to implementation.

CO-PRODUCTION PILOT FOR ENERGISING SETTLEMENTS: 2023-2024
The client, C40, is working in partnership with the City of Johannesburg, in particular City Power, to pilot a solar panel installation in an informal settlement of Johannesburg, requiring a feasibility and community buy-in of the proposed solution. This project involves training & employment of resident field workers, to be followed by data analysis and community discussion of feasibility of the proposed implementation solution. The contract was extended to include research of surrounding buildings because the energy solution involves utilising nearby warehouse roofs for solar panels.

REVIEW OF THE JOHANNESBURG PARK SAFETY STRATEGY:2023-2024
The GIZ Inclusive Violence and Crime Prevention Programme developed a Park Safety Strategy in 2017 which aimed to make Parks more accessible, inclusive and safe. A reviewed strategy aims to be implemented 2023-2028. Our brief includes desktop research, semi-structured interviews, focus group workshops, mapping exercises, identifying goals through various lenses (especially gender), and looking at case studies from the Global South.

SOUTH AFRICA WASTE PICKER REGISTRATION PROGRAM: 2022-2023
Piloting and implementing the registration of street and landfill waste pickers on a system developed by CSIR to fulfil the obligations of the Waste Picker Integration Guideline (2020) which aims to alleviate obstacles faced by Waste Pickers. The clients were Wits Enterprise, University of Johannesburg and the World Bank, and required working with local government and local waste pickers in 19 Municipalities across South Africa to coordinate training and implementation of waste picker registration.

SUNNINGHILL PUBLIC TRANSPORT FACILITY: 2022-2023
Community Participation Consultant services were provided to the JDA who had been appointed by JRA to investigate the feasibility of a public transport hub in Sunninghill. Project involved stakeholder engagement from local taxi users to taxi drivers, taxi management, local businesses and local leaders.

ART MY JOZI: IMPACT ASSESSMENT: 2022
A qualitative and quantitative study for the Johannesburg Development Agency which looked at how high-level TOD strategies are linked to local-scale planning, programs and transformations related to the #ArtMyJozi program in the Orange Grove area of Johannesburg, including studying broad impacts within the spheres of local perception and identity, local economies, heritage, tourism, art, and spatialities.

VREDEDORP & PAGEMENT REVITALISATION PROGRAMME: 2020-2022
Community Participation Consultant services to a design program by the Johannesburg Development Agency, requiring field work and co-production methodologies.

INDLELA YABAFAZI: HER CITY: 2022
Lead social facilitator in implementing a UN Habitat Her City toolkit on behalf of the Johannesburg Development Agency, a Toolkit which aimed to guide city officials and community participation through co-design and implement public spaces in participation with Young Womxn.

THE HEAD & THE LOAD: 2020
(William Kentridge, Philip Miller, Thuthuka Sibisi, Gregory Maqoma) Lead facilitator for community outreach program for The Head & The Load performance, involving mobilising community arts organisations to be part of a training program – starting with Train the Trainer – that exposed creative youth to the history of World War I as well as creative methodologies used in the performance. Also involved logistical coordination to transport 2,000 guests to and from the performance over 7 days. Unfortunately the program came to an abrupt stop just prior to the performance due to Covid-19.

JOHANNESBURG DEVELOPMENT AGENCY PLACEMAKING AND PUBLIC ART: 2018 – 2021
Public space place-making consultation, design, development and implementation for multiple inner-city projects for the Johannesburg Development Agency. We work alongside innovative government initiatives to create partnerships between local government and civil society, which lead to public space physical development supporting neighbourhood-level community initiatives. Sub-projects include Our City, Our Block; tactical urbanism pilot closure of Stiemens Street; Newtown public space festival which involved development and implementation of a media campaign; Workers Museum heritage cottage renovation and public art; Community call-out public art implementation.

PARK ACTIVATION COORDINATORS JOBURG & ETHEKWINI: 2018-2019
Park Activation Coordinators emerged from End Street North Park and Pullinger Kop Park projects. Existing community activists were selected as key park activators, with training provided by our team in co-production methodologies, communication skills, organisational skills, and space appropriate activation design and participation processes.

END STREET NORTH PARK CO-PRODUCTION: 2015 – 2016
Park and Public Space activation and co-management tactical urban pilot project under Johannesburg City Parks & Zoo (JCP&Z). This project specifically aimed at collaborations between community and JCP&Z officials, developing place specific and government relevant co-production methodologies, with the aim of responding better to Parks in the Inner city of Johannesburg through improving safety and security, inclusivity and accessibility. This project included engagement with a broad range of stakeholders, including not only city officials, ward councillors, residents and traders, but also users of the park who become ‘the eyes and ears of the space’ — homeless people, reclaimers and people who are living with substance addictions.

UN-HABITAT: BUILDING THE PUBLIC CITY: 2017 – 2019
Sticky assisted funding application to UN-Habitat’s Global Public Space Program, followed by implementation at project sites in Hillbrow, New Doornfontein, Braamfontein and Diepsloot. Project was under the direction of Johannesburg Development Agency. Emerging from the End Street North Park and Pullinger Kop Park projects, this funding and resource provided needed acupuncture to these projects which eventually became ongoing collaborations between City of Johannesburg Park related officials and Park communities.

PULLINGER KOP PARK OPENING AND ACTIVATION: 2017
Pullinger Kop Park was a challenging green public space in Hillbrow that remained closed for 2 years after it had been developed. Due to drug related challenges around the site, careful participatory approaches were designed and implemented in partnership with key residents, culminating in a successful opening of the park, which continues to be open and activated by community members until today.

AFRICAN MOBILITIES EXCHANGES AND EXHIBITIONS: 2018 – 2020
Senior project administrator and curatorial assistance for African Mobilities (AMO), exhibited at Architecture Museum in Munich, with Africa wide research exchanges and events. The curator of this exhibition had a focus on black knowledge production and African based designers and architects. Sticky coordinated a series of workshops across Africa (Lagos, Harare, Dakar, Kampala, Praia, Johannesburg) and other cities, including New York and Munich, assisting in the curation of content and the production of materials and exhibition. In 2020, AMO travelled to Lagos, and then due to the global pandemic translated to a podcast series, project managed by Jennifer, including oversight of the communications and social media campaign. http://africanmobilities.org/

WINDYBROW ARTS CENTRE MARKET RESEARCH & ACTIVATION: 2016 – 2017
Company residency at Windybrow Arts Centre to re-open and activate a youth-based arts centre for the Market Theatre Foundation. This project started with an in-depth market research process that interrogated what sort of arts-based community centre would be appropriate for a particularly challenging part of Johannesburg’s inner city. The in-depth research consulted an extremely broad range of stakeholders, from local communities to multi-disciplinary creative industries to high end arts practitioners followed by a residency which successfully piloted the suggestions which emerged from the research process.

STREETWISE SIX: A participatory board game: 2015
A participatory board game pilot that aimed to provide a platform for multi-demographical urban space design decisions. It is an interdisciplinary set up that questions privilege (of knowledge) through a debate around access to the urban common as a loop of exchange, translation and repair from within, in a place that has long been dominated by values from elsewhere.

WASSUP DIEPSLOOT COMMUNAL WATER & SANITATION PROGRAM : 2007 – 2022
Diepsloot water and sanitation repair and maintenance program in collaboration with many residents, the City of Johannesburg and multiple international partners in the NGO, Academic and Plumbing sectors.
Over 12 years Sticky facilitated the development and growth of a grass-roots based cooperative that repairs and maintains communal toilets, taps and drains in the settlement; including raising funds, building support and creating international partnerships for these extremely successful programs.

STUDIO X JOHANNESBURG PROJECT COORDINATOR: 2015 – 2017
Project coordinator of Studio X programs in South Africa, for Columbia University, New York. This project required senior administrative facilitation contracted by Columbia University, working under the curatorial direction of Dr Mpho Matsipa, and executing international and local programming and multi-media installations in the Johannesburg based studio.

WORK WITH US
In collaboration with Boundless City, curated an exhibition held at New York University for the IDS, University of Sussex, designed for the attention of the UN General Assembly 2013. Using existing networks, the team curated original research content, produced graphics and developed all aspects of exhibition implementation focusing on the participation of marginalised communities from
around the world.

THE GLOBAL STUDIO: 2006 – 2012
Project coordinator of The Global Studio – an international participatory design studio held in Istanbul, Vancouver, Johannesburg and Bhopal – which required coordinating many University funds, hundreds of students, dozens of collaborators and localised community spaces. The Global Studio helped a number of community projects operate for many years, such as WASSUP Diepsloot, and many community members attended UNHabitat events over the years.
